17 Nov 08 Ferumoxytol Resubmission Designated Complete, Class 1 Response By FDA - Iron Deficiency Anemia In Chronic Kidney Disease Patients

AMAG Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAG) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has designated the Company’s resubmission to the October 2008 Complete Response letter for its New Drug Application (NDA) for ferumoxytol as a complete, Class 1 response. The FDA has established a December 30, 2008 Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) target action date.

EMERALD 1 includes over 800 dialysis patients from over 90 sites in the United States.

Doctors and experts are baffled by the case of a 42-year old male American patient living in Berlin whose 10-year long HIV infection appears to have been “cured” by a bone marrow transplant given to treat his acute myeloid leukemia.

17 Nov 08 Bone Marrow Toxicity In Advanced Lung Cancer May Be Reduced By Proton Therapy And Concurrent Chemotherapy

Patients treated for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer who receive chemotherapy and proton beam therapy have fewer instances of bone marrow toxicity than patients who receive the standard treatment of intensity-modulated radiation (IMRT) and concurrent chemotherapy, according to researchers from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Cutting-edge “tweezers” are so sensitive that they can feel the tell-tale tug of tiny concentrations of pathogens in blood samples, yet don’t ever need to be sterilized - or even held - as they are ephemeral and weightless. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has licensed a patented “optical tweezers” technique for detecting and measuring very small concentrations of a biological substance - such as a virus on a surface.

17 Nov 08 Researchers Use New Method To Control Bleeding In Hemophilia

Investigators at Children’s Research Institute, BloodCenter of Wisconsin’s Blood Research Institute and the Medical College of Wisconsin have discovered a new way to help the blood clot by having the missing clotting factor packaged in the patient’s own platelets. In the October 2008 edition of Blood, investigators describe how a gene-modified bone marrow transplant can be used to initiate clotting in hemophilia.

17 Nov 08 Improved Recovery Rates And Reduced Mortality Following Dual Treatment For Stroke

It appears that stroke patients who receive both intravenous thrombolysis - a minimally invasive treatment that dissolves abnormal blood clots - and endovascular interventions - such as drugs and implanting medical devices - are much more likely to recover and have lower chances of dying, according to new research by the Zeenat Qureshi Stroke Research Center at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

17 Nov 08 Dronedarone (Multaq) Reduced The Incidence And Duration Of Hospitalization In Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

New data from the landmark ATHENA trial showed that dronedarone significantly reduced the incidence and total duration of hospital stays among patients with atrial fibrillation / atrial flutter (AF/AFL).
