17 Nov 08 Bone Marrow Toxicity In Advanced Lung Cancer May Be Reduced By Proton Therapy And Concurrent Chemotherapy

Patients treated for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer who receive chemotherapy and proton beam therapy have fewer instances of bone marrow toxicity than patients who receive the standard treatment of intensity-modulated radiation (IMRT) and concurrent chemotherapy, according to researchers from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

20 Oct 08 Women With Aggressive HER2 Positive Breast Cancer May Miss Out On Chemotherapy And Trastuzumab (Herceptin®)

Women with a particularly aggressive form of early stage (primary) breast cancer may miss out on optimal treatment which may include chemotherapy and trastuzumab (Herceptin) as a result of untimely or missing HER2-status test results, according to doctors responding to the results from a North of England Cancer Network audit of HER2-testing today.

07 Oct 08 Alternatives For Radiation Of Low-Grade Brain Tumors Found By Pediatric Study

A multi-institutional study led by researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has found that using chemotherapy alone and delaying or avoiding cranial radiation altogether can be effective in treating pediatric patients with unresectable or progressive low-grade glioma. The study was presented at the 40th annual International Society of Pediatric Oncology Meeting in Berlin, Germany. Low-grade glioma is the most common brain tumor in children.

30 Sep 08 Risk For Pancreatic Cancer May Be Increased By Hepatitis B Exposure

In a first-of-its-kind finding, researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center have discovered that exposure to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. The study, published in the Oct. 1 edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, also suggests that patients with this lethal form of cancer treated with chemotherapy may face danger of reactivation of their HBV.

17 Sep 08 Survival In Early Breast Cancer Improved By Adding Taxotere To Chemotherapy Regimen

For patients with early stage breast cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes, adding four cycles of docetaxel (Taxotere) into a sequential regimen of epirubicin followed by cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and fluorouracil (CMF) reduces the risk of recurrence and death, updated long-term results show.
