17 Nov 08 Bone Marrow Toxicity In Advanced Lung Cancer May Be Reduced By Proton Therapy And Concurrent Chemotherapy

Patients treated for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer who receive chemotherapy and proton beam therapy have fewer instances of bone marrow toxicity than patients who receive the standard treatment of intensity-modulated radiation (IMRT) and concurrent chemotherapy, according to researchers from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

11 Nov 08 Tumors Grow Faster Without Blood-Supply Promoting Molecule

Dense networks of blood vessels thought to spur cancer’s growth could actually hinder rather than promote tumor progression, according to a new study at the University of California, San Diego. The findings partly explain why drugs designed to treat cancer by strangling its blood supply have been disappointing when used alone and why those treatments are more effective when combined with traditional chemotherapy.

09 Nov 08 Study Showed Tarceva Improved Progression-Free Survival As A First-Line Maintenance Therapy For Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Genentech, Inc. (NYSE:DNA) and OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:OSIP) today announced that a global Phase III study (SATURN) met its primary endpoint and showed Tarceva® (erlotinib) significantly extended the time patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) lived without their cancer getting worse when given immediately following initial treatment with platinum-based chemotherapy, compared to placebo.

09 Nov 08 Researchers Find Predictive Tests And Early Treatment Delay Progression Of Blood Cell Cancer

Mayo Clinic researchers say they have moved closer to their goal of providing personalized care for a common blood cell cancer. They have found that the use of predictive biomarkers along with two targeted treatments significantly delays the need for conventional chemotherapy in patients with early-stage, but high-risk, chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL). Their study, published Oct.

06 Nov 08 MIT Creates Tiny Backpacks For Cells - Polymer Patches Could Ferry Drugs, Assist In Cancer Diagnosis

MIT engineers have outfitted cells with tiny “backpacks” that could allow them to deliver chemotherapy agents, diagnose tumors or become building blocks for tissue engineering. Michael Rubner, director of MIT’s Center for Materials Science and Engineering and senior author of a paper on the work that appeared online in Nano Letters on Nov. 5, said he believes this is the first time anyone has attached such a synthetic patch to a cell.

20 Oct 08 Computer Model Reveals Cells’ Inner Workings - MIT

After spending years developing a computational model to help illuminate cell signaling pathways, a team of MIT researchers decided to see what would happen if they “broke” the model. The results, reported in the Oct. 17 issue of the journal Cell, reveal new ways in which cells process chemical information and could indicate how to maximize the effectiveness of disease treatments such as chemotherapy.
