(Nasdaq:AFFY) today announced that enrollment has been completed in EMERALD 1, one of its Phase 3 clinical trials of its lead investigational therapy, Hematide™, which is being evaluated for the treatment of anemia in chronic renal failure patients. EMERALD 1 includes over 800 dialysis patients from over 90 sites in the United States.

Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Plymouth, have received a grant funding of £2million over the next five years from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to investigate new ways of developing clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Age is not an independent factor in cancer survival rates and should not influence decisions about how to treat older patients, according to a study in the November issue of IJCP, the Independent Journal of Clinical Practice. A team of hospital and University-based researchers from Barcelona, Spain, carried out a detailed study of more than 200 patients diagnosed with cancer.

15 Oct 08 GSK Responds To NICE’s 2nd Technology Appraisal Consultation Document On The Use Of Tyverb, In Combination With Capecitabine
The draft recommendations announced today by NICE in the second technology appraisal consultation document (ACD) suggest that Tyverb (lapatinib) should not be used in the NHS, except in clinical trials. “Given our involvement, it is difficult to comment without the appearance of self interest, however we strongly believe that the wrong decision has been made for patients, doctors and the NHS,” said Simon Jose, General Manager for GSK UK Pharmaceuticals.
